Mata Ortiz pottery, named after the small village of Juan Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, where it originated and is now being produced, has achieved the enviable status as perhaps one of the more innovative ceramics movements to evolve in the 20th century.

This pottery comes from Oaxaca, Mexico and is made entirely by hand, as it has been for hundreds of years. The high iron content in the clay carbonizes during firing, giving a dull black appearance, which is then polished to a pleasing sheen.So, please note that no two pieces are exactly the same.
